“Where’s the fleabag?” Officer Green met me at the front desk of the police station, the old poster of a cat hanging from the limb of a tree staring at me over her shoulder. Susan leaned to look behind me, clearly expecting to see Watson.

I gaped at her. “You said not to bring him. Your exact words were, and I quote, ‘Leave the annoying fleabag at home.’”

Susan straightened, but cocked her head. “I didn’t know you were capable of listening or following directions. I’m almost impressed.”

I mentally reprimanded myself for that. From the affronted look Watson gave me as I tossed a treat on the floor and then hurried from the cabin before he could follow, I’d be paying for it for days. However, I’d been surprised I was able to talk Susan into letting me speak with the twins at all and hadn’t wanted to push my luck.

Susan motioned me back without waiting for my response, and I followed her past the front desk and down a long hallway. “I don’t know whether to think this is a confirmation of your insanity or be impressed that you’re looking into this.” Susan stopped at a door beside a large one-way mirror, and to my surprise, she almost looked concerned and sounded apologetic. “Even you’re not going to be able to turn this into a murder investigation, Fred. And no, no one believes that Noah and Jonah intended to kill anyone. But they did, accidentally, but… still.”

“I know that.” I bit the words out and then caught myself and adjusted. This wasn’t Susan’s fault. She was doing me a favor, one she didn’t have to do. “I don’t think it is either, but the family wants me to look into it, and on the off chance…” I finished with a lame shrug.

“Can’t blame you. I would do the same if it was my brother.” Susan rolled her eyes and muttered to herself. “Lord knows he’s almost stupid enough to do something like this. Just waltzing through his life and unintentionally kill multiple people without knowing it was a possibility.”

Her words made me realize I hadn’t checked since the night before. “Is there news on Niles? Did he…?”

“No. He’s still alive. The bleeding isn’t the problem. The doctors fixed that quickly enough and made it clear you and I saved his life. But they thought they’d gotten him clean enough from where the metal punctured his intestines, but now there’s an infection, so it’s touch and go. He’s still in the ICU.” Her eyes narrowed knowingly. “And no, you cannot go talk to him, so don’t even think about it.”

“I wasn’t.” I hadn’t been, but it wasn’t a half-bad idea, at least no more of a waste of time than anything else. And on that thought, I reached for the door handle. “I should get started.” Without waiting, I opened it and walked through.

The twins were seated side by side at the secured metal table in the center of the room. It suddenly hit me that I’d now seen over half my family in this very location.
